Security weak points and fixes

Being aware of any possible weak points in your security systems can help you correct those so your Keyless Entry, Intrusion and camera systems work well. Have your security company stop in and review what you have now and make suggestions.

1. Typically a security system has a 10 to 15 year life span. When you have old outdated systems you can get them updated to newer technology often using existing wiring.

2. Many companies have motion detectors blocked by shelves so those are not functional. Many companies I visit have broken overhead door contacts or broken door contacts and motions. A security system is like a car, it need regular maintenance.

3. If there are troubles on your system get it serviced by a professional. Change the main panel batteries out every 3-5 years and mark the large batteries with the date.

4. Change your security codes frequently and never use just one code for everyone. Each person should have their own code. Avoid easy to guess codes like 6969, 2468 or 1234 or 4321. Avoid birth years like 1975 because burglars use these to guess your codes. We had a customer that had a large inventory taken during the night after the system was disarmed but they did not have cameras and the code used to disarm was known to many employees because all employees used the same disarm code.

5. Skimming is happening and this can compromise your security. Skimming uses a small proximity reader even attached to a phone to read and copy your card information. Now you can go to many stores and get the Security Proximity cards copied for a small fee. Also would be bad guys can skim your access card if they get close enough to you and that will allow them access into your building.

6. To prevent this you can have your card readers changed out to high security readers and you can get high security cards or fobs that cannot be copied at a grocery store. Talk to your security provider to get pricing to make this change.

7. It is not prudent to make your card reader disarm the security system. It may be more convenient but it compromises your security. Make it so if someone drops a card the person could get into the building but not disarm without a code. If someone does not know where their card is, cancel it immediately. 8. New camera systems with analytics can send you notifications when people enter areas after hours where they should not be. We have cameras with speakers so you can talk to the people and they even can play a warning message. These deterrent cameras make all the difference.

9. If your security panel, elevator phones or fire panel is having communication issues have a new cellular installed because most of those issues are because the phone lines are being changed to VOIP or digital lines and those do not work well or meet current code whereas Cellular units do.
