(801) 428 1384 Peak Alarm - Access Control Normally you can figure on 2000-2700 per door for installing a new access control system that is PC based. These newer systems will allow you to review records of who accessed which doors at what time etc... Many companies figure they can do it in house and have their electrician install a system. Remember that you will either have an electronic strike or a magnetic lock, door contact, RTE, request to exit motion, touch button or crash bar.(one of the RTE devices is required by Fire Code & if there is a Fire System these devices need to be connected into the system) Then you will have a reader (could be swipe or proximity), head end equipment that includes power supplies & controllers and last but not least the key tags or cards.

It is wise to have a contractor that does access control on a regular basis help you with the design and installation of your system to assure that it will be done correctly and meet all applicable codes. Adding access can eliminate the need for re-keying the building when someone quits or if keys are lost. If you go to a DSX or Keri or Bosch system for the entire building you can program the Cards or Key tags to allow access to certain parts of the building and not other parts. You can set up time limitations for certain Key fobs or cards and have other cards that allow 24 hour access. If you are thinking of adding access control be aware that there are many systems that are less expensive than the main brands and you get what you pay for. Also you need to be aware that these systems may not allow you to expand later on down the road. Peak Alarm has both high end systems from DSX, Nothern, Keri, Easykey, (Bosch) , and we have less expensive options available as well such as IEI and others. If you only want stand alone systems that do not record transactions, this of course will cost less. Price does vary from project to project depending upon ceiling access, availability of power and what door hardware is currently on the doors and distance to the doors. Since there are so many factors, you should be leery of contractors that give you pricing over the phone without visiting the site or at least asking you several questions. For example: Strikes can wear out sooner than magnetic locks because they have moving parts. You may have to replace them after 3-5 years. There are some strikes that are very easy to break into and others that are very difficult such as the UNL12 from Securitron.

Strikes take longer to install than magnetic locks although strikes look nicer and are not as noticeable as Maglocks. If maglocks are used you will need a request to exit motion or button. Be aware that there are code requirements as to where the door controllers may be mounted. Of course you want to mount them on the secure side of the door as close to the door as possible and the enclosure should have a tamper switch installed. If you have a need for elaborate security measures such as thumb print readers or retinal scanners AS&F has experience in these type of systems as well.

Retrofitting Access Systems- If you currently have a keypad access system we would recommend that you change out your entire card access system and replace it with a new one that will run off of Windows. If the computer goes down, the door controllers will continue to work independently of the computer. Although when a person is fired or quits you simply delete their access and their card will not work any longer. AS&F will try to work with you to salvage much of the wiring and current door hardware and integrate your systems together as they should be, not only for safety but for ease of maintenance and upgrading down the road.
