Fire Riser room information

When you have a fire protection system such as a wet or dry fire sprinkler system you will have a room or more than one room where you have fire protection equipment or fire sprinkler risers and often you will have signage on the outside of the building that says fire riser room.

You will see FDC or Fire Department Connections on the outside of your building and this is where the fire department can respond and often connect to feed more water into the building.

A common wet fire sprinkler system needs to have the system tied into the fire alarm system for monitoring. A common setup is monitoring a FLOW switch, 2 tamper switches and 2 backflows. This setup is determined by the type of system and the size of the building. You may need to monitor pressure switches, fire pumps and other equipment and Johnson Controls Fire Protection can help you monitor these items on your fire alarm with monitor modules which are AIM modules on a Simplex Fire Alarm system.

A flow switch tells you when you have water flowing through your pipes. There is a paddle inside the pipe and when the fire sprinkler system is activated it sets this off and an alarm is sent to dispatch the fire department.

120 Volt bells normally don’t function if when you have a power outage

A water gong is powered by the water going through the pipes so this does not require power

Other bells often have birds build their nest in the back of the bells

Installing a WP Weatherproof Horn Strobe or Speaker Strobe on the outside of the building has battery backup and it will be tied to the fire alarm system.
