Cable is not all the same

Often we will see camera installations done where normal CAT5 cable is installed on the outside of a home or business.

If the cable will be in the sun we use special cable so it will last longer because wire can become brittle or damaged in the sun or if it gets wet.

When installing cable underground it is best to use underground rated burial cable.

Make sure to verify what cable is needed for each type of installation.

If you have a PLENUM ceiling you will need PLENUM cable.

Making sure that your POE switches have enough power to power your cameras is an important step. Make sure if you go over 328 feet to use a POE extender or a balun connector that can extend the power/signal.

When installing a fire alarm system you will need FPL, FPLR or FPLP cable that is RED and rated for fire alarm systems.

When installing access control systems we also use a special composite cable made specifically for ACCESS CONTROL.

When installing security systems we use a specific cable depending on the distance from the headend to the equipment so if a company uses a small gauge wire for longer runs you can have voltage line drop and issues so often we will use an 18g4c cable or even a 14g4c cable depending on the situation when I have seen others run security systems on phone wire.

Ask your consultant about the cable and if you are going to do a DIY project make sure to spend the extra money to get the right cable.
